Urban VI

Life

Urban VI (1318–1389, birth name: Bartolomeo Prignano) was pope 1378–1389. In his vehement zeal to reform the papacy and stamp out simony and luxury, he alienated most of the cardinals, who in his stead choose Clement VII, triggering a schism within the church that was to last until 1417. Alfonso of Jaén and Catherine of Siena were strong supporters of Pope Urban VI.

Pope Urban expressed a wish to canonize Birgitta of Sweden, but died before he could do so.
