Gregory XI

Life

Gregory XI (1329–1378, birth name: Pierre Roger de Beaufort) was pope 1370–1378. He was the last of the seven Avignon popes and was successful in moving the Curia back to Rome in 1377. Both Birgitta, who had had six revelations telling Pope Gregory to return to Rome, and Catherine of Siena, played a role in persuading the pope to leave Avignon.
